Bathroom - Winner

WINNER: FRANCESCO DRAISCI & PAUL THRUSH, FRANCESCO DRAISCI STUDIO

An existing but unused loft space at the top of a Victorian property in North London was transformed into a luxurious bathroom by Francesco Draisci and Paul Thrush.

The brief called for a safe and easy-to-maintain room that could maximise the use of the available space under the sloping roof, providing top-of-the-range finishes and plenty of storage.

The design response was to create a clam, sophisticated and ethereal atmosphere in a rationally-organised room. A sculptural deep counter was fitted for preventing users from banging their heads against the sloping roof, but also to provide plenty of storage. All the available space in between services and pipes was rationalised for accessible storage of bathroom products and towels. One wall was completely clad with frameless mirrors to expand the visual space.

The counter, bathtub and shower walls are all clad with Corian, making all the surfaces seamlessly waterproof and easy-to-clean.

Flush doors and removable access panels complement niches and functional pockets. A couple of round lids on top of the counter conceal more storage that can also be used to for flowers.

In the shower area, the extraction grille has been fully integrated into the wall and the large shower system is set flush with the ceiling to maximise the available headroom. A hinged shower screen also seems to disappear against a wall when not in use.

The horizontal lights enhance the dynamic effect of a mirrored reflection of the room whilst still providing a soft and moody atmosphere thanks to a translucent Corian buffer that also doubles up as a hanger and shelf over the bath.

A range of sanitaryware and brassware was specified to suit the space, including Dornbracht taps and showerhead, Alape basin, Bette bathtub, Bisque radiator and Duravit WC.

A consistent pearl grey colour was chosen for the Corian, the walls and ceiling to unify the whole scheme and create an overall soothing and refreshing effect for this thoroughly modern and highly accomplished design.
