Rehousing the Washing Machine

Saving space by integrating the wash basin into the washing machine

Whilst studying for a BA in Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, Turkey, Korhan Büyükdemirci designed the Beko Entegre as his final year degree project.

The project took three months to complete and was the result of the co-operation between the University and Turkish household appliance manufacturer Arçelik. The company had been trying to increase its exports to the Russian market, but was finding it
a challenge to satisfactorily address the placement of washing machines in bathrooms - as is typical in many parts of Eastern Europe - where space is generally much more limited than in the kitchen.

Büyükdemirci came up with the Beko Entegre, a design which incorporates the sink and washing machine into a single entity. The sink is placed on top of the washing machine and is extended forward giving the user room to place their feet when using the sink.
There is also a waterproof control panel placed on the top surface, which keeps it out of the way of small children. The machine also incorporates a drawer for the storage of
washing accessories such as washing powder or toiletries.
